IM-PRESSION 2006, mail art & digital art

Walking through the world with your eyes wide open you may ask yourself: what can possibly still impress us?

We are living in the sixth year of the 21st century. And history stubbornly repeats itself. Man, using all of his wit, is weaving the web of pain and death delimiting our historic epochs. Those who yesterday escaped extermination by the Nazis today go about practicing what was learned in open flesh. The wall that divided Europe and whose crumbling has been celebrated as a victory, has been reconstructed in the deserts of Palestine. Television delivers our daily measure of destruction, epics of modern technology. Nothing more globalized than death and the gift of the masters of war to kill whomever wherever they wish. Every single action can count on the blessing of the prophet, the man with the crown of thorns, the contemplative one or the one who occupies Mecca.

But the artists of the world, by what are they impressed today?

How the light is falling on the urban landscape or how the victims of globalization are falling? Are we preoccupied with getting maximum advantage out of new graphical techniques and digital ways of communication rather than with the daily reality of our world? Why allow reality to contaminate our clean artistic expression? Have we got anything to do with those suffering tortures in the concentration camp of Guantanamo? How big is your world?

From the arts and its instruments, from the will to speak up, to re-create or create, using the minimal form that affects us, or the direct act of protest, from black & white to the feast of colors, with all the digital technology at our hands: what to tell about what still impresses us?

IM-PRESSION 2006, mail art & digital art, is an international action of art organized from Rotterdam in the Netherlands by the centre for graphic arts HogeDRUKgebied. We invite mail and digital art artists from the whole world to participate, to share their impression 2006 with us.

The centre for graphic arts HogeDRUKgebied is an initiative of Rotterdam artists from different cultural backgrounds dedicated to the organization of courses, exhibitions and actions based on the manual and digital forms of graphic arts. HogeDRUKgebied means ‘zone of high pressure’, referring to atmospheric pressure as well as the pressure as a means for getting prints.
